DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY.
During the first term, the Readership in History being vacant, Mr. A. N. Macfadyen, B.A. (Oxon) looked after the work of the Department. In September, slightly late for the begin- ning of the second term, Mr. N. H. France, M.A. (Cantab), the new Reader in History arrived from England: Mr. Macfadyen very kindly carried on until Mr. France was ready to begin his new duties. The University was extremely fortunate in being able to secure some one of the calibre of Mr. Macfadyen, to supervise the work in History during the long interregnum: the Department owes him a debt of gratitude for having so successfully looked after it, for more than a year.
The unavoidable lack of a general background is a very serious hindrance to an intelligent study of History: there is an unfortunate tendency for the students merely to learn their text books by rote. The standard however of interest and industry is generally very satisfactory. The attendance at Tutorials has been very good and some excellent work has been done both for them and for the examinations,
In the latter however a tendency was shown to forget the first term's work.
No change in the syllabus has been made. The numbers
